Sunburn results from too much sun or sun-equivalent exposure. It maybe produced by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly from the sun’s rays.
Usual mild symptoms in humans and animals are red or reddish skin that is hot to the touch, general fatigue, and mild dizziness. An excess of UV-radiation can be life-threatening in extreme cases. Exposure of the skin to lesser amounts of UV radiation will often produce a suntan.
Sunburn is completely preventable. If you are going to be in the sun for more than 15 minutes, take the following precautions.
How to prevent sunburn
- Use a sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of at least 15.
- Apply the sunscreen 15 minutes before exposure.
- Reapply every 2 hours.
- If you are allergic to PABA, the active ingredient in most sunscreens, use non-PABA alternatives. Ask your pharmacist.
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat that will shade your face.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, long sleeved clothes.
- Drink lots of water. Sweating helps to cool the skin and lessen damage.
Home treatment for sunburn
- Cool baths or showers help take the heat out.
- Mix ¼ cup vinegar and ¼ cup water together, then gently spread over the affected areas.
- Make a strong solution of black tea. Cool the tea and apply to your skin.
- Put one chamomile tea bag in the bottom of a glass jar. Cover with 2 tablespoons witch hazel. Let soak for 15 minutes, then take out the tea bag. Add 1 egg white and 1 teaspoon honey. Use the tea bag like a cotton ball to dab the solution onto the burned areas. Refrigerate and use frequently. Discard any unused portion after four days.
