  • Keep physically fit.
  • Do something active every day.
  • Find exercise that you enjoy.
  • Maintain your flexibility, strength, and stamina.
  • Eat well.
  • Consume a variety of wholesome foods.
  • Eat less fat and more beans, gains, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Drink lots of water. (Eight 8- ounce glasses of water a day.)
  • Recharge your batteries.
  • Get seven to eight hours of sleep per day.
  • Try out a variety of deep breathing and relaxation techniques.
  • Don’t poison your body.
    • Keep smoke out of your lungs and tobacco out of you mouth.
    • Drink alcohol only in moderation.
    • Avoid unneeded medications.
  • Manage illness wisely.
    • Use this book and other resources.
    • Find a good doctor.
    • Maintain control of health care decisions.

2.    Stay mentally active.
If you want to keep your marbles, use them. The brain benefits from exposure to stimulating environments and activities.

  • Learn something new every day.
  • Read, write, talk, and think about what interests you.
  • Take classes and seminars in new subjects.

3.    Nurture the ties that bind.
Studies show that people who have many social ties, such as being married, having contact with friends and relatives, and belonging to a church or social group, have better health than people with few social connections.

  • Create a support network of family and friends who will help see you through a crisis.
  • Find a friend you can confide in. Be a confidant for someone else
  • Combine physical and social health by joining a walking group or exercise class.

4.    Know where your help is.
The best way to stay independent is to know when to ask for help.

  • Become familiar with your community’s support services for seniors, such as transportation, financial counseling, and meals-on-wheels. The local senior center or area Agency on Aging is a good place to go for information on available services.

5.    Accentuate the positive.
The pictures we have in our minds and the verbal messages or self-talk we give ourselves affect both our minds and bodies.

  • Expect good things to happen.
  • Add humor, laughter, and fun into every day.
  • Count your blessings and express thanks.

6.    Celebrate your wisdom.
Victor Hugo said, “One sees a flame in the eyes of the young, but in the eyes of the old, one sees light.” More than anything else, the world needs wisdom.

  • Recognize your purpose for living.
  • Think about your values and beliefs.
  • Help others to gain wisdom, too.
